SPACE TO CREATE :: Saffron Craig

It’s Wednesday again already, time for the second post in my ‘Space to Create’ series. If you missed it you can see the first post here. These weekly posts are about sharing glimpses behind the scenes with the some of my favourite creatives. I’m always intrigued to learn more about the creative processes and spaces of the designers, artists and makers I admire, and I hope you’ll enjoy it too. Some of the folks I feature may be names you’re familiar with and others will be lesser known – there will be inspiration and insight and lots of lovely creations and spaces to see.

Today’s Space to Create belongs to fabric designer Saffron Craig. Saffron’s designs reflect her unique, whimsical and contemporary vision of Australia, including wombats, Kookaburras, rolling hills and lovely flora in unexpected colour palettes. She has recently released a new fabric range called Valley View, which “captures the essence of Australia’s breathtaking valley’s with hidden spots and natural secrets while paying homage to folk art, cross stitch and patch work”. Saffron is such a genuine and lovely person and her joyful sunny spirit shines through in her work.

TUTORIAL :: Sew a cute puppy pillow softie

Children love cuddling up to a special pillow at home or in the car, and this cute puppy with his floppy ears and an eye patch could easily become a new favourite. Especially as it’s handmade with love. I’ve created a free sewing pattern and step by step tutorial for this cute puppy pillow softie. With a bit of imagination you could use it to make a whole menagerie: a cat, mouse, monkey, or whatever your child’s current favourite animal happens to be.

Ceramics by Tara Shackell

Macrame and string art aren’t the only crafts harking back to the seventies that have me looking twice. I’m also loving rough and rustic looking ceramics that remind me of the ones we had in my childhood home. The combination of smooth glazes and tactile surfaces in these pieces by Melbourne based artist Tara Shackell is really gorgeous. I’m feeling a bit partial to the organic nature of Tara’s work as a reaction to all the smooth whiteness and pops of colour around my home.

What do you think? Organic and rustic or white perfection? I have a foot in both camps at the moment, and happily so.

LOVING :: Ashley G for Urban Outfitters

Ashley Goldberg aka Ashley G has designed a range of bed linen and rugs for Urban Outfitters. If only they’d ship the rugs to Aus I’d have that beauty on the top left in my apartment.
