SPACE TO CREATE :: Tiel Seivl-Keevers

To say that I love the art of Tiel Seivl-Keevers is an understatement. I admired Tiel’s beautifully layered and detailed work for some time before I managed to buy one of her paintings which now hangs opposite my bed. I never tire of looking at it. So it’s lovely to be able to feature Tiel in my Space to Create series. I hope you enjoy a glimpse into her creative space and world, and this interview with her – I especially love her analogy about creativity and surfing.

INSPIRATION :: Wen Min Li

Sydney-based artist Wen Min Li depicts everyday objects with a wonderful almost naive quality. Her art explores space and time and the disconnect between her upbringing in traditional Chinese culture and life here in Australia. As a result Wen Min’s art is a very personal depiction of her life, with objects floating in a framework of traditional Chinese spatial simplicity.

Wen Min Li’s current exhibition, titled ‘The Flowers do not Answer’ is showing at the Flinders Street Gallery in Sydney. A friend of mine owns one of Wen Min’s works and it’s captivating – the subtleties are hard to capture in a photograph – so I’m looking forward to visiting the exhibition to take in her latest body of work.

SPACE TO CREATE :: Penny Leaver Green

Sharing her creative space and some insights into her creative process today is English textile artist Penny Leaver Green. Penny’s wonderful work incorporates repurposed fabrics which often means the fabric leads the design and sometimes subject matter of a particular piece. She doesn’t design her creations before commencing them, but rather she allows her ideas to evolve and develop as she stitches. I’m really happy to be able to share Penny’s art with you, and wait til you see her lovely custom built garden studio!

INSPIRATION :: Simon C Page

Simon C Page is a UK based graphic designer and illustrator who sells his fabulous graphic geometric art as prints, scarves and wall paper for electronic devices. Since posting yesterday about modern quilting I can’t help but look at look at this art and think what incredible quilts they’d make.

INSPIRATION :: Andrea Smith

I’ve been intending to post about Illustrator Andrea Smith‘s work for some time, and when I saw her collages in htf magazine it gave me a nudge. Andrea comes along to our abcd bloggers’ meet ups and she’s such a sweet and gentle soul. She has a great eye for colour and I love her simple, vibrant and graphic style. Andrea’s collage illustrations are like little stories with layers of motifs, colour and texture.

You can purchase prints, stationery, jewellery and ornaments in Andrea’s Etsy shop, and see more of her work on her website.

In the bottom left corner of the image below is Andrea’s business card – how cute is that! I have one stuck on the wall near my desk and smile each time it catches my eye.

INSPIRATION :: Karen Margolis

Today I’m inspired by these breathtaking works on paper by artist Karen Margolis. Karen integrates art and science with these works that are psychological portraits, capturing interior moments frozen in time.  Karen says: I translate meticulously gathered data on thoughts and feelings into negative space and color-coded dots that produce fields of molecular patterns.  Colors are coordinated to a flow chart I developed that categorizes and assigns a Pantone reproducible color to each emotion.  The works, evocative of the interplay between neurotransmitters and chemicals in the brain, reveal patterns of emotional progressions. Wow, right? How great is that?

Burning holes in paper and adding pieces of maps are two of the processes Karen uses to both deconstruct and construct her art – using the circle motif for both positive and negative space. I’m fascinated by her research and thinking and so taken by her art. Karen Margolis’ website has many more examples of her works on paper as well as beautiful sculptures… I hope this glimpse inspires you to take a look.
